Representing 'America' in Guntur
Photographs and text: Sanam Roohi (Provincial Globalisation PhD student)
The town of Guntur is known as a centre of agricultural trade, education and overseas migration, particularly to the US. The culture of migration in the Coastal Andhra region is reflected in the daily sights and sounds of the town – in hoardings, images, and in the form of buildings constructed with aid from US-based Telugus. This album depicts how the fascination with ‘America’ is pervasive in Guntur’s everyday signs, mostly in the more affluent neighbourhoods.
