Engineering Education and Mobility

The Coastal Andhra region has almost the highest concentration of private engineering colleges in the country. The rapid expansion of private professional education is closely linked to the history and pattern of migration in the region. Following the earlier wave of medical professionals, numerous engineering graduates migrated from Coastal Andhra to the USA after the IT boom of the late 1990s. Due to widespread aspirations for IT jobs, especially abroad, engineering degrees are still highly valued here. Catering to these desires is a burgeoning education industry, from ‘corporate’ intermediate (11th and 12th class) colleges that train students to succeed in engineering entrance exams, to education consultants who help students go abroad for higher studies – which itself is an important route of migration.
